Ocean City is a large resort town located along the northeastern shore of Maryland. It is located 140 miles southeast of Baltimore and 140 miles north of Virginia Beach, Virginia. As of 2016, there were approximately 6,999 people living in Ocean City. It is the largest city Worcester County.
Ocean City sits on land that was previously owned by Thomas Fenwick, a local Englishman. The first beachfront cottage to receive paying guests was constructed in 1869 by businessman Isaac Coffin. Similar to today, visitors during that time period were attracted to the area because of the sandy beach and relaxing atmosphere. Following the construction of the first cottage, more boarding houses and even hotels were constructed thanks to efforts of other prominent businessmen. Today, Ocean City continues to attract many guests. According to the town website, the strip of land Ocean City is located on “now supports hotels, motels, apartment houses, shopping centers, residential communities, and condominiums.” Despite the many hardships the town has faced over the past decades, Ocean City remains a beautiful and attractive resort town.
